SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: NEW WORKS FESTIVAL 2018
DESCRIPTION:THE LBP 2018 NEW WORKS FESTIVAL \nTITLE: Plays: Happy Thanksgiving & Men Overboard. \nAUTHORS: Tim Boland (Happy Thanksgiving)\, Rich Orloff (Men Overboard). \nDIRECTORS: Sheridan Cole (Happy Thanksgiving)\, Reed Flores (Men Overboard) \nRUN:  Friday\, March 23rd (Happy Thanksgiving)\, & Saturday\, March 24th (Men Overboard) \nThis is a community theater production.  Non-Equity.  There is no pay. \nAUDITION DATES: \nOpen Call: \nDates: Tuesday\, Feb. 27 (One night only for both plays.) \nTimes: 7pm – 9pm \nLocation: Long Beach Playhouse \nREHEARSALS: \nThere will be 3-4 rehearsals before the stage reading arranged between the directors and actors cast. \nAUDITION REQUIREMENTS: \nBring headshot and resume. Sides from the play for cold readings will be provided at the auditions. \nNEW WORKS FESTIVAL INFORMATION: \nThis annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year\, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and audience talk back. \nAs it is a stage reading\, there will only be 3-4 rehearsals\, and actors will not need to memorize their scripts.  The stage reading of their show will only happen one night\, and there will be a talk back with the audience after the reading. \nTHE SHOWS: \nHAPPY THANKSGIVING by Tim Boland \nSNYPOSIS: \nFull-length play set on Thanksgiving Day\, 2016\, two weeks after the highly divisive U.S. presidential election. A Michigan-state (Blue state turned Red!) married couple\, two conservative Republican parents\, are holding their annual Thanksgiving dinner for their three adult children coming back to Jackson\, Michigan (often branded as the birthplace of the Republican party): their first-born\, a liberal firebrand Hillary-supporting daughter\, along with their middle child\, a gay Republican son\, and the baby of the family\, a Sandernista democratic socialist daughter. Annual Thanksgiving family gatherings are normally fraught with enough anxiety for this diverse and politically-conscious family\, but after the long and contentious presidential campaign of 2016\, this post-election turkey get-together threatens to be a disaster in the making. One American family and their binds of marriage\, parenthood\, brother and sisterhood will all be tested as the family members are challenged to answer the ultimate question\, which comes first\, party\, candidate\, country or family? \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES: \nARTHUR HOLDEN – (Early 60’s). Family patriarch. Old school traditionalist. Still\, open-minded. Steely. Still\, with a soft side. \nBEV HOLDEN – (Early 60’s). The real family boss. Simple but wise. Path-of-least resistance peacemaker personality. Hidden rebel. \nDEBORAH HOLDEN GONZALEZ – (Early to mid 30’s). Daughter. Liberal firebrand\, passionate to the point of neuroses. Glass half-empty. \nROBERT HOLDEN – (Mid 30’s). Son. Conservative. Republican. Gay. \nSARAH HOLDEN – (Later 20’s). Baby of the family. Bernie Sanders acolyte. Socially engaged. Still\, a realist. \nHECTOR GONZALEZ – (Mid-30’s). Husband to Deborah. Progressive liberal. Less fiery than his wife. Glass half-full. \nMALIK HENDERSON – (Later 20’s-Early 30’s). Husband to Sarah. Black. Very well-read. An anarchist at heart. Still\, playful\, humble. \n  \nMEN OVERBOARD by Rich Orloff \nSNYPOSIS: \nWhen you’re fighting for a child’s soul\, what rules apply? A New York Bar Mitzvah brings together three generation of men in a Jewish family: three middle-aged brothers who have taken different paths (becoming a politician\, a therapist and a Buddhist monk)\, their elderly patriarch\, and a precocious 13-year-old boy who doubts he’s ready to be a man. Added to this mix is the boy’s Bar Mitzvah tutor\, an attractive Hungarian woman who has a past and possibly a future with the boy’s therapist uncle. MEN OVERBOARD is my boldest mix of comedy and drama as it explores\, “What makes a man?” \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES: \nERNIE SILVER – (70’s or older). An old man\, father of three \nDOUG SILVER – (Mid-40’s). Ernie’s middle son\, a psychotherapist \nJAY SILVER – (Early 40’s). Ernie’s youngest son\, a Buddhist monk\, \nROBERT SILVER – (Late 40’s). The stolen formula could provide the motive while Poirot deduces which of Sir Claud’s house guests\, or family members\, is the killer. \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES: \nTREDWELL (M – 46-65) The faithful servant\, but at the same time knows all “the dirty laundry”. \nLUCIA AMORY (F – 25-45) She is Richard’s half- English and half-Italian wife who was largely raised throughout the European continent. She speaks perfect English with an English accent. She is devoted to her husband\, but has a mysterious past and is obviously hiding something. \nCAROLINE AMORY (F – 40+) Claud’s dotty younger\, maiden sister who never stops talking. She is very conservative\, innocent\, and prone to not quite getting the full picture of what goes on around her. She has no idea that half of what she says is funny and often inappropriate. \nRICHARD AMORY (M – 30-45) He is the only son of Claud Amory. He’d rather pursue a military career then be under his father’s thumb. He’s not stupid\, but he’s not the scientific genius that his father is. Newly married\, he is very much in love with his wife Lucia who he married after a brief whirlwind courtship. \nBARBARA AMORY (F – 25-35) She is Claud’s niece and relies upon him for support as she is orphaned. She is a very modern young woman who speaks her mind\, and who likes to live a bit on the wild side. She wants a husband to take her away from her dreary life. \nEDWARD RAYNOR (M – 30-40’s) Sir Claud’s faithful secretary. Observant and intelligent\, and somewhat reserved. One of the few people who actually understands his scientific discoveries and is capable of organizing his/her notes. \nDR. CARELLI (M – 30-60’s) a mysterious visitor who claims to be an old friend of Lucia’s family. Equally charming and suspicious. Speaks with an Italian accent (not necessarily a good one). The character can be played as a real Italian or someone pretending to be a real Italian). \nSIR CLAUD AMORY (F – 50+) He is the irascible Lord of the manor\, who has no affection for his relatives and is devoted solely to his scientific discoveries. \nHERCULE POIROT (M – 40+) A famous detective from Belgium (slight accent) hired by Sir Claud to investigate a theft and death threats. He later ends up investigating Sir Claud’s murder. He has a great sense of dry humor and a sense of the ironic. Oftentimes only Hastings gets his jokes. \nSIR ARTHUR HASTINGS (M – 30-40’s) A former British Army Officer. Loyal friend of Poirot\, though neither as clever or intelligent. \nDR. GRAHAM (M – 30+) Sir Claud’s doctor\, and intelligent man who is not fooled by flattery or easily influenced. Very logical and capable of presenting the facts as he sees them. \nINSPECTOR JAPP (M – 40-60) A Scotland Yard inspector. Loud\, sometimes inconsiderate by nature. \nJOIN OUR FACEBOOK EVENT AND LET US KNOW YOU ARE COMING!
