SUMMARY:MEN ON BOATS
DESCRIPTION:MEN ON BOATS\nProduced by JD Theatricals in collaboration with the Long Beach Playhouse.\nPlaying in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater\nApril 27 – May 25\, 2024\nBy Jaclyn Backhaus\nDirected by Meredith Miranda\nMEN ON BOATS is the true(ish) history of the 1869 expedition of the Grand Canyon when ten explorers\, in four boats\, lead by a one-armed captain\, set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. In an off the canyon-walls funny comedy\, the stalwartness\, the selfishness\, the cockiness\, and the cluelessness of this crew of insane yet loyal adventurers drips with satire as some of the roles are gender swapped.  This is a rollicking adventure that turns the American myth of man-ifest destiny on end and challenges the notion of who gets to make history with respect to its bold if fallible pioneers. \nPURCHASE YOUR TICKETS HERE:\nCHOOSE YOUR DATE:\nTHIS PRODUCTION CLOSED ON MAY 25\, 2024 \nLBP’s Opening Night Gala for MEN ON BOATS is sponsored by the Port of Long Beach! Due to the age of our building\, there is no elevator and the theater is only accessible by stairs. \n  \nDescription of the Festival: \nThe annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year\, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and an audience talk back. \nAbout the Shows:\nTHE ONE GOOD THING OR “ARE YOU PATRICK SWAYZE?” – Brothers Jamie and Tommy share a remote farmhouse on the cliffs of the Irish Sea. One morning Jamie makes an astonishing declaration. He announces that he is dead – and now a ghost. Tommy\, naturally\, is unconvinced\, maintaining that his brother’s delusion is caused by the grief Jamie has suffered since their mother’s death. Through humor and pathos\, the play explores themes of love\, loss\, and redemption\, culminating in the discovery that the eternal exists in their fraternal bond. The One Good Thing… should fuel speculation about what is real and what is imaginary. However\, ultimately\, it should touch the heart. \nWritten by Joe Bravaco \nJUDGEMENT OF THE EYE – Han Van Meegeren\, a struggling Dutch artist\, realizes his skill is forgeries and sell millions of dollars of fake art. When Germany invades\, the SS compel him to sell paintings to Goering\, and he makes millions more. At the end of the war\, he is accused of selling national treasure to the enemy and is to be executed. He claims the paintings are fakes and to prove it he will paint another. His story exposes the contradictions of how we perceive and value art\, in a tale so absurd\, and with a character so flawed\, it can only be true. \nWritten by Simon Bowler \nFREE TICKETS TO THE NEW WORKS FESTIVAL 2025 ARE MADE POSSIBLE BY A GENEROUS SPONSORSHIP FROM THE PORT OF LONG BEACH.
