Special performances on Thursday and Sunday nights may be added for private parties and special events. \nThis is a community theater production.  Non-Equity.  There is no pay.  \nAUDITION DATES:\nOpen Call:   \nDates: Monday\, December 30th\, 2019 & Wednesday\, January 1st\, 2020 \nTimes: 7pm – 9pm \nLocation: Long Beach Playhouse   \nCallbacks: \nDate and Time: Thursday\, January 2nd\, 2020; 7pm – 10pm\, by invitation only. \nREHEARSALS:\nFirst Read-Through: January\, 4th\, 2020\, Noon – 3pm \nRegular Rehearsals: Starting January\, 6th\, Monday – Thursday\, 7pm – 10pm\, with some Saturday rehearsals\, 9am – 12pm when needed. \nLocation: Long Beach Playhouse \nLINK TO BEGINNING REHEARSAL CALENDER\n  \nAUDITION REQUIREMENTS:\nBring headshot and resume. Cold readings from the script. Prepare a short physical comedy gag to perform at the audition (only do as much as you can do safely).  \nSHORT SYNOPSIS:  \nThe first act of a farce entitled Nothing On is rehearsed and performed by a cast of somewhat ill-equipped actors (and techies)\, first during a final rehearsal and\, subsequently\, at two performances during the run (once letting the audience in to the mayhem occurring backstage).  This farce within a farce requires breakneck timing\, daring courage\, and strong physical comedy abilities. \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:\nNOTE:  All roles are open to all ethnicities \nDOTTY OTLEY  (F\, 50s-60s) The producer of the show and the woman playing the comic lead\, Mrs. Clackett\, the housekeeper.  Not as secure on stage as she was in her prime\, but still a fierce performer.  (Able to switch between an American and Cockney accent.) \nLLOYD DALLAS (M\, 40s-60s) The director of Nothing On\, dealing with a play that is plagued with difficulties\, while trying to move on to his artistic project of directing Richard III.  (May have British or American accent.) \nGARRY LEJEUNE (M\, Late 20s-Early 40s) Leading actor playing Roger Tramplemain\, the philandering Real Estate agent.  Pictures himself as a strong leader\, but is unable to intelligently complete a sentence.  (Able to switch between an American and British accent.) \nBROOK ASHTON (F\, 20s) A beautiful\, but frightfully inexperienced young actress.  Must be comfortable performing most of the play in her underwear.  Having a secret relationship with Lloyd.  (Able to switch between an American and British accent.) \nPOPPY NORTON-TAYLOR (F\, 20s-30s) The problem-solving Assistant Stage Manager\, also having a secret relationship with Lloyd.  She understudies the female roles in Nothing On.  (Must have strong Cockney accent.) \nFREDERICK FELLOWES (M\, 30s-50s) An extremely good-looking and nice leading man\, who plays Philip Brent\, the owner of the estate in Nothing On.  Always willing to take the blame or smooth over a problem\, usually to the detriment of everyone.  (Able to switch between an American and British accent.) \nBELINDA BLAIR (Female\, 30s-50s) Attractive leading lady type\, who plays Flavia Brent\, Philips well-to-do trophy wife.  She’s the one in the cast one goes to for the dirty secrets.  She knows them all.  Will do anything to keep the show afloat.  (Able to switch between an American and British accent.) \nTIM ALLGOOD (M\, 20s) Stage manager for Nothing On.  He also does EVERYTHING that needed for the theatre\, hence usually accomplishing nothing.  He is the understudy for all male roles in Nothing On.  (Must have strong Cockney accent.) \nSELSDON MOWBRAY (M\, 60s-Death) Formerly a brilliant stage actor\, who’s career has hit the skids because of poor life choices\, he is now playing the smallest role in Nothing On – The Burglar.  (Able to switch between an American and Cockney accent.)

It’s 1967: the Vietnam War raging and the Age of Aquarius is dawning. Claude\, his best friend Berger\, their roommate Sheila\, and their Tribe of friends struggle to balance the demands of the harsh and violent world with their dream for a more beautiful and peaceful world. When Claude receives his draft notice\, he must decide whether to join his friends in resisting the draft\, or bow to the pressures of society and his conservative parents\, thereby sacrificing his ideals and\, possibly\, his life. Hair was a sensation when it premiered in 1967\, as it brought the counterculture movement into the theatre and the national spotlight. Berger’s best friend\, recently drafted\, whose only possession\, other than his freedom\, is his hair. A charismatic leader that women adore\, boys emulate\, and men follow into the breach. A man of conscience who struggles with the conflict of what his heart tells him is right and what the authorities around him lead him to believe. Strong improv skills preferred. \nSHEILA (F\, Rock Alto/Belter) A second semester student and passionate protester from NYU who lives with Berger and Claude\, aspires to spread love\, loves Berger\, but having Claude’s baby. He convinces Othello that his beloved Desdemona has been unfaithful to him. Iago carefully ensnares his fellow soldiers and citizens including the lieutenant Cassio\, the wealthy Rodrigo\, the young Bianca\, and his own wife\, Emilia. Set in a 1960s world with parallels to our own\, the destructive power of jealousy and mistrust for the “other” in a time of civil change will ultimately lead to violence for those touched by hate. \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:\nNote: Ages listed are perceived age\, Actors of any age that can play this range may audition. \nOTHELLO (M\, to play 30-40\, Black/African descent) A general with a commanding presence and extreme self-control. A man that worked his way up through the ranks through discipline and force of will\, a force of nature both feared and respected.  Newly married\, he is still learning how vulnerable his heart is. Despises Othello and devises a plot to destroy him. Intelligent but lacking education\, he is charming and jovial\, inherently trustworthy to those around him as he feels like the salt of the earth. He dreams of honor and holds his reputation above everything else. From behind their screens\, these individuals who might never encounter each other in real life — a student\, an IRS-pusher\, and a financier– forge a bond as strong as blood. Off the computer\, however\, in a Puerto Rican neighborhood in North Philly\, Odessa Ortiz’s real-life family is falling apart. Her nephew\, Elliot\, has returned from Iraq both physically and emotionally broken. Her niece\, Yaz\, is unable to reconcile her identity as a North Philly girl from the barrio with her upper-crust\, intellectual lifestyle. Her sister\, who was the mother that Odessa could never be\, is dying of cancer. Two men partnered in love as well as show-biz\, Georges and Albin have their self-worth challenged after twenty years of un-wedded bliss when Georges’ son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a conservative\, right-wing politician. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as “normal” to meet the family of the bride-to-be\, but Albin has other plans\, which escalate with hilarious results! Is lovingly devoted to his long-term partner Albin\, and a doting father to his son Jean-Michel.  Role requires a performer that can sing well\, is energetic\, and is a great comic actor.  (Must be able to move well and to engage in same sex intimacy.) \nJEAN-MICHEL (M\, 20 – 25)\, Vocal Range: High Baritone\, A#2-G4 – Georges’ charming son who has been spoiled by his loving parents. Somewhat of a playboy who has recently finished sowing his oats and fallen desperately in love with his fiancee Anne. He balances all the tasks of managing the hectic household and making Albin happy\, even though he may not have all the qualities of a good butler. Is Dindon’s daughter\, and fiancee to Jean-Michel.  May also double as one of the Cagelles during Act One.  (Must be a good dancer and be willing to perform in drag.) \nDINDON (M\, 45-60) Vocal Range: Baritone\, Bb2-Eb4 – A right-wing politician who is the Deputy General of the Tradition\, Family\, and Morality Party. (Must be able to move well and be willing to perform in drag.) \nJACQUELINE (F\, 30-60)\, Vocal Range: Mezzo\, B3-F5 – A friend to Georges and Albin and the glamorous owner and operator of the Riviera’s most exclusive restaurant\, Chez Jacqueline. She has a larger-than-life personality and imagines herself to be a much bigger celebrity than she actually is. Oblivious\, a bit cantankerous\, curmudgeonly\, possibly loud. Once was a romantic\, a creative. (English with Quasi Eastern European Accent…take that as you will) \nHETCHMAN’s WIFE (F\, 45-70 – Must be able to play age range of 30-90) A woman who is nothing but supportive\, smart\, and lovely. Deserves the world\, but asks only for crumbs. As her name entails\, she is indeed Hetchman’s unfortunate wife. (English with Quasi Eastern European Accent…take that as you will) \nMECKEL (M\, 45-70 – Must be able to play age range of 30-90) A best friend to Hetchman. Best because he is the only friend Hetchman has. Wonderful\, kind\, charming\, like chocolate.  (English with Quasi Eastern European Accent…take that as you will) \nVOICE (F\, 20-30) A young woman who questions her life. Strong\, hard-working\, either wise or smart\, she doesn’t know yet. Means well\, always\, but isn’t capable of it\, usually.   \nGABE (M\, 20-30) A young man who doesn’t question his life. A problem-solver to a fault\, which he will try to solve as well.  \nWALL (F\, 40 – 70 – Ageless) A wall. She has seen the history of this house and ventures to tell the story. Patient\, or maybe not. Didactic\, but probably not. (English with Quasi Eastern European Accent…take that as you will) \nGOLEM (M\, 20 – 40 – Ageless) A golem\, a la the Jewish golem of Prague. DESCRIPTION:In this true story of Henrietta Leavitt\, an early 20th century astronomer hampered in her passions because she was born into an age where women didn’t pursue such things brings\, her struggle for equality is brought to vivid life.  Much like the women of Hidden Figures a few generations later\, Leavitt is able to overcome the biases of her day as she joins a group of women “computers” charting the stars for a renowned male astronomer who claims credit for their work. Only much later did the truth come to light. A realist who knows what it is to be used up and left\, yet somehow still glows with a few embers of life’s possibilities; she is fiercely devoted to Vera. \nCANEWELL (M\, 35+\, African American) A harmonica player.  Floyd’s best friend yet still feeling the sting of Floyd’s betrayal.  He is edgy\, cautious and has a big heart.  He is fiercely devoted to Vera. (Ability to play harmonica a plus.) \nRED CARTER (M\, 35+\, African American) Floyd’s friend and drummer.  A simple\, steady man who indulges superstitions.  Currently in the middle of seven years of bad luck because of a mirror he broke.  He hails from Alabama and truly enjoys a good time. \nVERA (F\, 30-40\, African American) A true woman in temperament.  Necessary independence\, body and soul.  She is still in love with Floyd while gratefully indulging the love of Canewell.  She is fiercely protective of her own heart ever being broken by Floyd again. \nHEDLEY (M\, 60+\, African American) A Hill District entrepreneur where he sells this and that\, including sandwiches from chickens which he raises and butchers himself.  He has Haitian roots\, and increasingly suffers from the ravages of tuberculosis fever\, which drives his vision of a past and future glory for the black man\, including the realization of his dream to have a son to carry on his legacy. \nFLOYD BARTON (M\, 30+\, African American) a blues singer and guitarist with big aspirations.  He has deep flaws\, yet benefits from a personal epiphany as a result of his recent stay in prison.  He is a deeply talented musician\, passionate\, hopeful and as in love with Vera as much as he is in love with his own ambition.  (Ability to play blues guitar a plus.) \nRUBY (F\, 20 – 29\, African American) Louise’s niece.  Young and fiercely independent.  Fatally attractive and in search of solutions for her already deeply troubled young life. \nJOIN OUR FACEBOOK EVENT AND LET US KNOW YOU ARE COMING!

In the piece de resistance\, they plan to cover the room in meat and honey so Kyle will be mauled by a bear. Sides for cold readings will be provided at the auditions.  \nNEW WORKS FESTIVAL INFORMATION:  \nThis annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year\, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and audience talk back. \nAs it is a stage reading\, there will only be 3-4 rehearsals\, and actors will not need to memorize their scripts.  The stage reading of their show will only happen one night\, and there will be a talk back with the audience after the reading. \nTHE SHOW: SHRUTI GUPTA CAN TOTALLY DEAL \nby J. A survivor telling her story. \nMADGE OBERHOLTZER(F\, late 20s). Works in the Indian Government’s literacy program. A fiercely independent woman.  \nERMINA MORE – (F\, 30s). Madge’s best friend. Loyal and independent.  \nD.C. STEPHESON (M\, 30s). Grand Dragon of the KKK in Indiana. Noted liar\, millionaire\, ambitious and charming.  \nMATILDA OBERHOLTZER (F\, 50 – 60). Member of the Women’s Temperance League. The concerned mother of Madge.  \nGEORGE OBERHOLTZR (M\, 60s). Postal worker and Madge’s father. A bit ahead of his time.  \nASA SMITH (M\, early 30s). Lawyer. Fought Germans outside of Paris where his eyes where his eyes were damaged by mustard gas. Noted KKK enemy.  \nMRS. JOHNSON (F\, 50 – 60). A busy body. Neighbor and friend of Matilda.  \nLILLIAN REED (F\, 20s – 40s). Hotel Maid and reluctant witness. (Actor will also act as the “narrator\,” reading the necessary stage directions.)  \nSWING (M\, 30s – 40s).
