Disguised as a nun\, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir\, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but\, in doing so\, blows her cover. Soon\, the gang is giving chase\, only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood. \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:\nNOTE: All roles are singing roles. \nMost roles also require dancing/moving well. \nAll ethnicities are strongly encouraged to audition.  All roles are open to any ethnicity unless indicated in the character description. \nDeloris Van Cartier (F – 25-35\, Ethnicity: African American\, Vocal Range: E3-F#5) An aspiring performer\, trying to find both fame and a place in the world. When forced to hide in a convent\, she initially refuses to embrace her lifestyle but learns to embrace it when she works with the choir. Loud-mouthed\, and sassy\, but ultimately caring. \nMother Superior (F – 50-70\, All Ethnicities\, Vocal Range: D3-E5) The head of the convent\, sarcastic and a bit stiff. Extremely protective about keeping her sisters away from the outside world\, which puts her in direct opposition to Deloris and her musical teachings. \nSister Mary Robert (F – 16-25\, All Ethnicities\, Vocal Range: F#3-A5) A postulant\, abandoned as a baby and raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken but singing with Deloris lets her find her voice. Her wallflower lifestyle has made her live a shell of a life. \nSister Mary Patrick (F – 35-50\, All Ethnicities) A nun of the convent. Consistently perky\, enthusiastic\, and easily excitable. \nSister Mary Lazarus (F – 50-70\, All Ethnicities\, Vocal Range: F3-B4) A nun of the convent and the head of the choir. Rather deadpan and the least welcoming of any of the nuns\, but she gets caught up in Deloris’s soul music. \nMonsignor O’Hara (M – 45-60\, All Ethnicities\, Vocal Range: G4-E3) One of the heads of the convent. Constantly concerned with financial matters\, though soul music surprisingly puts him in a different mood. Speaks with the soulful bass-baritone of Barry White or a late night R&B radio station DJ. \nCurtis (M – 30-40\, Ethnicity: African American\, Vocal Range: A2-Ab4) A Club owner\, notorious gangster\, and Deloris’s boyfriend. Cocky and controlling\, always on the verge of violence. \nEddie Souther (M – 25-35\,  Ethnicity: African American\, Vocal Range: Ab2-B4) The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school classmate of Deloris who helps get her into hiding. Faces a lot of nerves when under pressure\, causing him to sweat profusely. He still yearns for Deloris after all these years\, and dreams of being her hero. \nTJ (M – 16-30\, Ethnicity: African American\, Vocal Range: Db3-Eb5) Curtis’s nephew and one of his thugs. Deft and cognizant of the fact\, constantly in a state of ignorant bliss. \nJoey (M – 30-40\, All Ethnicities\, Vocal Range: Bb2-Eb5) One of Curtis’s thugs. Believes himself to be quite the ladies man. \nPablo (M – 25-40\, Ethnicity: Latinx\, Vocal Range: C4-F5) One of Curtis’s thugs. A natural follower\, constantly speaks Spanish. \nSister Mary Martin-of-tours (F– 40-60\, All Ethnicities) A Nun of the convent. Clearly in her own world\, but has her moments of surprising clarity. \nSister Mary Theresa (F– 60-70\, All Ethnicities) A nun of the convent\, the oldest of the group. Decrepit at first glance but secretly packs a punch. \nMichelle (F– 20-30\, All Ethnicities\, Vocal Range: Bb3-F5) One of Deloris’s back-up singers. Lippy and always quick with a retort. \nTina (F– 20-30\, All Ethnicities\, Vocal Range: Ab3-F5) One of Deloris’s back-up singers. A little thick and naïve. \nErnie (M – 25-35\, All Ethnicities) One of Curtis’s thugs. Initially thought to be a mindless yes-man\, he turns out to be an undercover police informant. \nEnsemble (All Ages\, All Ethnicities) Nuns; Bar Denizens (Bar Patron\, Waitress\, Pool Player\, Drag Queen); Homeless People; Fantasy Dancers; Alter Boys

But\, she fits in with this family to a tee. \nDONALD (M\, 30’s) – Rheba’s boyfriend. He is “on relief\,” and therefore spends most of his time with Rheba and the family. He enjoys bringing flies for the snakes\, and helping out around the house. \nBORIS KOLENKHOY (M\, 50’s-60’s) – A Russian émigré\, Kolenkhov is Essie’s private ballet instructor. “He is enormous\, hairy\, loud\, and very\, very Russian.” (Requires a Russian accent.) \nMR. Reading 100+ scripts a year\, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and audience talk back. \nAs it is a stage reading\, there will only be 3-4 rehearsals\, and actors will not need to memorize their scripts.  The stage reading of their show will only happen one night\, and there will be a talk back with the audience after the reading. \n  \nSHOW 1:  A LOVELY DAY FOR A BOATING TRIP by Lindsey Brown\nStage Reading March 25\, 2022 \nSHORT SYNOPSIS:  \nA triptych of plays about three lovely days and three not so lovely boating trips as three groups of people each set out in a rowboat with darkly comic results.  In play one\, a couple set out for open water with their marriage on the brink.  Just how far would you trust your spouse?  In play two\, a bride tests the limits friendship as she tries to escape her wedding.  And in play three\, a man\, his girlfriend\, and his grandmother set out for a seemingly cozy picnic on a remote island.  But what’s in all those heavy bags he’s bringing? \nPlays of the triptych: \n(And to kill your spouse) – What breaks first\, the boat or the marriage?  \n(And to escape your own wedding) – Will she\, won’t she\, why is she running?  \n(And to get rid of a body) – Nothing like a boating trip to form bonds and find bodies.  \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:\n(And to kill your spouse):\nGLORIA: (F\, 40’s). Married to Graham. Knows what she loves and how to keep them. Determined\, brutal\, candid.  \nGRAHAM: (M\, 40’s). Married to Gloria. Looks out for number one\, but doesn’t always know how to count. Quick on his feet.  \n(And to escape your own wedding):  \nSADIE: (F\, 30-40’s). The bride. Is starting to become predictable. Determined\, adaptive\, half-measure thinking.  \nGWEN: (F\, 30-40’s). The best friend and Maid of Honor. A human Swiss army knife. Prepared\, compassionate\, intense.  \n(And to get rid of a body):  \nNANA (Violet Ward): (F\, 70+). Has seen her fair share of idiots and that’s probably not over. Intimidating\, opinionated\, shrewd.  \nLENO: (M\, Early to Mid 20’s). Violet’s grandson. Means well but doesn’t always end well. Kind\, waffler\, probably knows what he’s doing.  \nSIERRA: (F\, Early to Mid 20’s). Rolls with the punches and sees the cup half full. Quick-thinker\, devoted\, lovely. (Needs to be able to hold a tune as she sings Amazing Grace.) \n  \nSHOW 2:  REMBRANDT PERFECTED by Braddon Mendelson\nStage Reading March 26\, 2022 \nSHORT SYNOPSIS:  \nOn a Spring day in 1839\, American artist and telegraph inventor Samuel Morse and scenic artist Louis Daguerre — whose daguerreotype ushered in the new world of photography — meet for the first time in Daguerre’s studio in Paris. He soon discovers that\, although the residents seem nice\, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together\, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs\, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Filled with gut-busting humor and a delightfully catchy score\, not to mention puppets\, Avenue Q is a truly unique show that has quickly become a favorite for audiences everywhere. \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:\nPUPPET CHARACTERS: Ages are an indication of the puppet age in the show\, not necessarily the age of the actual puppeteer: \nPRINCETON (early 20’s): A fresh-faced kid just out of college. He is looking for his “purpose” in life and is pursuing a career\, love and life satisfaction. He is a little naïve to the realities of life\, as most people are at that age. Bb2 – G4 Tenor \nKATE MONSTER (mid 20’s): A kindergarten teaching assistant\, a bit older than Princeton. Although he appears abrupt and rude\, a sensitive side is revealed during the show. He has a “Cookie Monster” growl to his voice which would need to be maintained. \nCAST: \n“ . . . to Kill a Spouse” \n\nAnne Gundry (GLORIA)\nJeff Cheezum (GRAHAM)\n\n“ . . . to Escape Your Wedding” \n\nDesi Molinari (SADIE)\nMaria Oliviera (GWEN)\n\n“ . . . to Get Rid of a Body” \n\nRoxanne Martinez (NANA)\nJack Ritter (LEO)\nCarole Lousie (SIERRA)\n\n& \nREMBRANDT PERFECTED\nLocal Winner of the LBP New Works Festival 2022\nPlaying in the Long Beach Playhouse Studio Theater\nReading on Saturday\, March 26\, 2022\nBy Braddon Mendelson \nOn a Spring day in 1839\, American artist and telegraph inventor Samuel Morse and scenic artist Louis Daguerre — whose daguerreotype ushered in the new world of photography — meet for the first time in Daguerre’s studio in Paris.
