Due to the age of our building\, there is no elevator and the theater is only accessible by stairs. \n \nDescription: \n\n\n\n\nThe Club of Broken Fasts is a madcap take on the 1985 John Hughes classic\, rendered in Shakespearian verse. You know the story: Brian the Brain\, Claire the Princess\, Andrew the Jock\, Allison the Madwoman\, and Bender the Wretch are all stuck in Saturday detention under the not-entirely-benign watch of Vice Principal Vernon. Together\, they spend the day joking\, musing\, fighting\, kissing\, flouting authority\, and\, hopefully\, growing up. Through elevated language and spectacular design melding iconic ’80s looks with Elizabethan sensibilities\, The Club of Broken Fasts transforms this classic coming-of-age tale into a dramatic stage comedy fit for the Globe itself! \n\nOr if you prefer\, in verse: \nIt’s forty years since first we came to see \nThe work of teen movie auteur John Hughes. \nSee it re-writ in verse\, with endless glee! \nYou know the story\, though the words are new: \nBrain\, princess\, jock\, madwoman\, and a wretch\, \nOne Saturday\, sit in their school detain’d; \nAnd\, ere the strike of four\, all rules reject\, \nTheir secrets\, nay\, their very souls laid plain. \nBut one day’s liv’d within our humble show\, \nYet in that day\, such marvels come to pass \nThat something more of life you’ll come to know \nWhen you behold the Club of Broken Fasts! \n\n\n\nThe LBP Studio Collaborative Season offers outside\, local theatre companies and performing arts organizations the opportunity to produce their own shows in our Studio Theater.

Local artists will share true five-minute stories about how music shaped some of their most memorable moments as we hold space and laugh\, cry\, and rock the night away! \nWAKE (the f*ck) UP! – was created from a workshop called “The PLAYground!” The artists met weekly for months and explored the Enneagram\, deep inner work\, performing arts\, and the stories of their lives as they took a peek behind their masks at their shadows and mined for the GOLD hidden within. This experiential theatrical production is a heart-wide-open look at our lives and the stories we tell. It’s about learning to see and accept what is – as it is\, stepping into our uniquely inspired shoes\, and saying “THIS IS ME.” \nCompany Statement:\nThe LBCT is a small\, diverse\, and collaborative theater that creates opportunities for the Long Beach community to come together and participate in synergized shows that blend and blur the lines between the visual and performing arts by mixing genres. The concept for this community theater is to create a safe space where our friends and neighbors can share their stories using any form of expression they like. ALL are welcome to participate – from children to adult dreamers and senior citizens. Between the morning service and Sunday dinner\, old tensions and quiet grief simmer beneath the surface. Elice Johnson\, the family matriarch\, leans on her faith to hold everyone together\, but her adult children wrestle with doubt\, disappointment\, and what belief means in their own lives. As memories of their late brother Emmanuel linger\, conversations about love\, loss\, and religion push the family to confront the difference between inherited faith and lived experience. \nCompany Statement:\nNodding Off in Church marks the first official production under our company\, and we couldn’t think of a better place to bring it to life than the Long Beach Playhouse. I had the honor of performing here last year in August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson\, an experience I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. To now return as both creator and director is a full-circle moment I’m deeply grateful for. With this company\, our goal is simple: to tell stories that spark conversation. The only problem is there is no Fairy Queen. There is no Duke. They are not in a serene forest. This Midsummer Night’s / As You Like It delusion is Rose’s shield against a brutal reality she doesn’t wish to confront — she and her family are in hiding from the Nazis in the grim forests of Poland during World War 2. Her theatrical fantasy is a shield against unbearable reality\, but her family fears her delusion may get them killed. Fifty-year-old Henry II of England seeks to establish a line of succession and summons his family for Christmas at his castle in Chinon\, Touraine. He wants his youngest son\, John\, to inherit his throne\, while his estranged wife\, Eleanor of Aquitaine\, reprieved from imprisonment in England by Henry for the holiday\, favours their eldest surviving son\, Richard\, a proven warrior. Henry invites Philip II of France\, son and successor of Louis VII\, Eleanor’s first husband\, to settle some business. Louis had made a treaty with Henry pledging Philip’s half-sister Alais\, currently Henry’s mistress\, in troth to Henry’s future heir; Philip demands either a wedding or the return of her dowry\, the strategically important county of Vexin near Paris. \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:\nNOTE: A British Dialect may be required. \nHENRY II (M\, 50 – 60\, all ethnicities.) \nKing of England. Although aging\, Henry acts like a much younger man. He has boisterous energy\, a forbidding temper\, and a relentless drive that makes him a formidable opponent. He is determined to have John\, his youngest son\, as his heir\, but he knows that if he does his remaining family could start a civil war. He is in love with his much younger mistress\, Alais\, the daughter of the late King of France\, but has no qualms using her as a bargaining chip in his plans. (Role may require an Intimate Moment with the character of Alais – kissing.) \nELEANOR (F\, 60 – 68\, all ethnicities.) \nQueen of England\, Duchess of Aquitaine\, & former Queen of France\, Henry’s estranged wife\, has been imprisoned under house arrest for ten years for supporting her sons in an unsuccessful rebellion. A decade older than Henry\, she’s always been his equal in intelligence\, wit\, & ambition. Her love for him is conflicted: she cares deeply for him but fiercely resists being disregarded or subordinate. Years ago\,  when Henry turned to a mistress\, Eleanor devoted herself to raising Richard\, her son. \nRICHARD (M\, 25 – 35\, all ethnicities.) \nThe eldest surviving son of Henry and Eleanor\, Richard has been a famous soldier since his sixteenth birthday. He’s impressive and domineering but has a tense relationship with both of his parents. Richard is his mother’s favorite\, yet he’s wary of her. He wonders if she genuinely loves and supports him or uses him as a tool in her conflict with his father. Richard feels neglected and excluded by Henry and silently yearns for his father’s approval but covers his pain with his warrior’s demeanor. (Role may require some Same-Sex Intimacy with the Character of Philip – Kissing/Embracing.) \nGEOFFREY (M\, 20 – 25\, all ethnicities.) \nThe second eldest surviving son of Henry and Eleanor\, Geoffrey is attractive\, charming\, and the most intelligent of the brothers. His parents\, however\, never consider him in the running to be king— even though he possesses the intellectual promise of a great monarch. His feelings of being neglected have made him a cold amoral schemer who constantly changes his alliances between Richard and John\, hoping to disgrace them both so he can gain the throne and his parents’ love and respect. \nJOHN (M\, 16 – 25 to play a 16 y.o\, all ethnicities.) \nThe youngest son of Henry and Eleanor\, John is Henry’s favorite and his chosen heir. Though he can be sweetly charming when he wishes\, he has been spoiled rotten by his father\, and often taunts his brothers\, knowing that Henry will back him up. However\, beneath his boasting\, he is deeply insecure\, as he knows he has neither Richard’s brawn nor Geoffrey’s brain. His lack of maturity and desperate desire to come out on top lead him to trust anyone who offers him a helping hand. \nALAIS (Pronounced “Alice”) (F\, 20 – 25\, all ethnicities.) \nDaughter of the late King of France and half-sister to King Philip. She is deeply in love with Henry\, many years her senior\, and has been his mistress for seven years. In that time\, she has grown from a simple teenage girl to a gentle and thoughtful young woman with a quiet strength. Though at times she tries to match Henry’s family in their ruthlessness\, she knows her kind nature will not allow her to truly compete with them. (Role may require an Intimate Moment with the character of Henry II – kissing.) \nPHILIP (M\, 18 – 24\, all ethnicities.) \nThe young King of France\, half-brother to Alais. Philip has come to Henry’s court to demand that a treaty made with his late father be fulfilled. He is relatively new to his throne and initially behaves with a commanding dignity\, showing little emotion. When his negotiations with Henry fail\, he encourages the rebellious thoughts of Henry’s sons\, making empty promises to each in turn. Philip is especially close to Richard\, who was his lover two years ago. Reading 100+ scripts a year\, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and an audience talk back. \nAbout the Shows:\nAS WE LIKE IT follows the story of a woman named Rose\, who tries to motivate her family to rehearse in the serenity and privacy of the woods a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It to be performed at the wedding of the Duke and his betrothed\, the Fairy Queen. The only problem is there is no Fairy Queen. There is no Duke. They are not in a serene forest. This Midsummer Night’s / As You Like It delusion is Rose’s shield against a brutal reality she doesn’t wish to confront — she and her family are in hiding from the Nazis in the grim forests of Poland during World War 2. Her theatrical fantasy is a shield against unbearable reality\, but her family fears her delusion may get them killed. The play explores the danger and necessity of self-made fictions and asks when stories protect us and when they put everything at risk. \nWritten Oded Gross \nWOLVES AT THE DOOR follows Grace and Gavin\, who lost their daughter\, Lucy\, to gun violence. The gunman committed a mass shooting in an ‘incel’ styled revenge plot. Lucy\, at a dance class nearby\, was collateral damage. While grieving\, Grace is bombarded by a stream of visitors\, all who seem to want to exploit her in some manner. Meanwhile\, she and Gavin grapple with their own relationship woes\, as one of them wants to heal and one isn’t ready to move on. DESCRIPTION:HARVEY\nPlaying in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Mainstage Theater\nApril 4 – May 2\, 2026\nBy Mary Chase\nDirected by Bob Fetes\nIn this popular comedy from the golden age of Broadway\, the kindly Elwood P. Dowd insists on including his friend Harvey in all of his sister Veta’s social gatherings. Trouble is\, Harvey is an imaginary\, six-and-a-half-foot-tall rabbit. To avoid further family embarrassment\, Veta decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. Yet her frantic explanations of the situation to the doctors get her mistakenly committed instead of her mild-mannered brother. Feeling trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman\, Kim meets Jeff\, another young misfit at school\, and an uncertain relationship develops between them. Soon her life goes “akimbo\,” contending with a hypochondriac mother\, a rarely sober father\, a scam-artist aunt\, her own mortality\, and most terrifying of all\, the possibility of first love. A dark comedy that gives a quirky twist to the term ‘coming of age story’. \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:\nKIMBERLY LEVACO (F\, 60+ to play 16 y.o.): Kimberly is sixteen but appears much older because of a rare (fictional) aging disorder. She’s intelligent\, perceptive\, and often wiser than the adults around her. She longs for normal teenage experiences: friends\, romance\, and a sense of belonging\, but she’s also aware that her time is limited. He drinks too much and uses humor to hide his sense of failure. Buddy is not cruel\, but he’s unreliable and emotionally lost. He wants to do right by his family but lacks the maturity or stability to make lasting change. His love for Kimberly is genuine\, but his inability to take responsibility often undermines it.   \nPATTIE LEVACO (F\, Mid 30s – 40s): Kimberly’s mother: High-strung\, self-centered\, and constantly overwhelmed\, Pattie has a hard time accepting reality. High energy\, charming\, funny\, gentle\, but with strength. He is the sort of person others instinctively follow.  He sings “Save the People\,” “All for the Best\,” Alas for You\,” and “Beautiful City” \nJOHN THE BAPTIST/JUDAS (Baritone\, 18+): Will perhaps split this role between two actors. He has attributes of both Biblical figures: He is both Jesus’ lieutenant and most ardent disciple\, and the doubter who begins to question and rebel. Like Jesus\, he is also charismatic\, but in more of an overt revolutionary way. Usually played by someone handsome and masculine\, with an undertone of sexuality. He is the most “serious” and intellectual of the group\, though as with all the actors\, he must still possess a good sense of physical comedy. He sings “Prepare Ye\,” “All for the Best\,” and “On the Willows.” \nNICK (Tenor\, 18+):  Very high energy. Impish and playful. In the original\, he might play several musical instruments\, including concertina\, recorder or guitar if the actor has this ability\, but not a requirement of the role. He sings “We Beseech Thee.” \nTELLY (Tenor\, 18+):  Not the brightest in the bunch\, he is a little slow on the uptake. But there is a great sweetness and innocence about him. He sings “All Good Gifts.”  \nGEORGE (Tenor\, 18+):  The comedian\, the class clown. The guy who can do a hundred voices and imitations. He sings “Light of the World.” \nANNA MARIA (Alto\, 18+):  A bit of a tomboy\, but basically open and sweet. Perhaps the youngest of the group. Sometimes a little slow to get things\, but when she does\, she commits all the way. Has an “earth mother” kind of warmth to her. She sings “By My Side.”  \nMORGAN (Alto\, 18+):  Sassy and slightly cynical\, the most urban of the group. Also the “sexy” one\, but her sexiness contains a large element of put-on\, in the manner of Mae West or Madonna.
