SUMMARY:LYMAN
DESCRIPTION:The LBP Studio Collaborative Season offers outside\, local theatre companies and performing arts organizations the opportunity to produce their own shows in our Studio Theater. \nLYMAN \nCompany: LYMAN The Play\, produced by John Dameron \nTickets: $20 \nDESCRIPTION: \nLYMAN is a 2-act play set in a multi-universe. It centers on the life of Lyman Liri\, a piano prodigy and Vietnam veteran who becomes homeless in our current universe. Each scene is a different destiny of Lyman based on the choices he makes at universal points in his life. Guest-starring Lou Beatty Jr. (Betty White’s “Off Their Rockers”). \nCOMPANY STATEMENT: \nLYMAN demonstrates how each of us is only one choice away from being homeless ourselves. It encourages audiences to see their own reflection in the face of every homeless person they meet and\, hopefully\, inspires them to make a difference. \n“If we could accept the truth that all homeless people are capable of being heroes and all people are capable of being homeless\, then perhaps homelessness could once and for all be solved.” \n– Anne Johnstonbrown

SUMMARY:LONG BEACH SKETCH/PROV FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The LBP Studio Collaborative Season offers outside\, local theatre companies and performing arts organizations the opportunity to produce their own shows in our Studio Theater. \nLONG BEACH SKETCH/PROV FESTIVAL \nCompany: The Upperclassmen \nTickets: $8 \nDESCRIPTION: \nLike peanut butter and chocolate\, or the saxophone and 1980s soft rock\, some things just belong together. THE LONG BEACH SKETCH/PROV FESTIVAL celebrates two great tastes together – sketch and improv comedy – from some of the funniest and most original troupes performing today in a two-night extravaganza of absurdity. \nOn Saturday\, Feb. 17\, 2018\,  Long Beach Sketch/Prov will offer three comedy workshops as part of the Festival.  If interested\, please RSVP to sketch.prov.festival@gmail.com. Payment will be taken the day of by cash or check. \nThe Work Shops: \n“Silence. Space. Storytelling. Connection.”\n\n12:00 P.M.-2:00 P.M.\n$20\n\nConnecting and telling stories come to us much easier when we slow down. In this workshop\, learn the power of silence and how to use the space around us to connect with our scene partners in an improvised story. We’ll learn how to give focus\, develop presence and awareness\, and even discover the time to speak. Discover skills that are as relevant in our workplace and relationships as they are in improv storytelling.\n\nAbout the Instructor\nLauren Baumbauer is a director and manager for Modjeska Unscripted Theater in Lake Forest\, CA. Having studied extensively at Spectacles Improv Engine in Fullerton and the Impro Studio in Los Angeles\, Lauren’s teaching focuses on narrative storytelling and discovering unique forms of improvised expression.\n\n\n“Etch the Sketch”\n12:00 P.M.-2:00 P.M.\n$20\n\nComedy sketches are tricky beasts to wrangle\, especially for such a short time. For this workshop\, students are asked to bring in a 2-5 page first draft of a sketch and/or 1-2 pages of ideas and premises. We’ll derive our lessons from these\, focusing on character\, how to write for performance\, and how to adapt sketches for both stage and film.\n\nAbout the Instructor\nChris Mertan is a writer\, director\, and member of The Upperclassmen\, host troupe for Long Beach Sketch/Prov. Over the decade\, he has produced and staged countless sketches for both stage and screen in the greater Orange County and Long Beach area. Chris hold a degree in writing from UCSD\, and specialized in drama and film.\n\n\n“Character Study”\nwith Special Guest Instructor Andy Goldberg\n3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M.\n$20\n\nCharacter counts\, especially since it’s one of the foundations of great improv. Great characters yield great results\, and in this workshop\, we’ll explore the tools that help craft memorable characters to get these results. As useful for the actor and writer as for anyone simply looking to think on their feet a little better\, “Character Study” shows that you can think creatively with confidence.\n\nAbout the Instructor\nAndy Goldberg is an actor\, educator\, and founder of Off the Wall\, LA’s longest-running improv troupe. He is also the author of Improv Comedy\, the seminal textbook originally published by Samuel French\, and has either taught or performed with Robin Williams\, Larry David\, Bonnie Hunt\, Fred Willard\, Tom Hanks\, Bryan Cranston\, and hundreds more.\n  \nCOMPANY STATEMENT: \nEstablished in 2010\, the Upperclassmen is one of America’s only (barely) functioning comedy and improv troupes that keeps a lawyer and registered nurse on retainer.

Sides from the play for cold readings will be provided at the auditions. \nNEW WORKS FESTIVAL INFORMATION: \nThis annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year\, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and audience talk back. \nAs it is a stage reading\, there will only be 3-4 rehearsals\, and actors will not need to memorize their scripts.  The stage reading of their show will only happen one night\, and there will be a talk back with the audience after the reading. \nTHE SHOWS: \nHAPPY THANKSGIVING by Tim Boland \nSNYPOSIS: \nFull-length play set on Thanksgiving Day\, 2016\, two weeks after the highly divisive U.S. presidential election. A Michigan-state (Blue state turned Red!) married couple\, two conservative Republican parents\, are holding their annual Thanksgiving dinner for their three adult children coming back to Jackson\, Michigan (often branded as the birthplace of the Republican party): their first-born\, a liberal firebrand Hillary-supporting daughter\, along with their middle child\, a gay Republican son\, and the baby of the family\, a Sandernista democratic socialist daughter. Annual Thanksgiving family gatherings are normally fraught with enough anxiety for this diverse and politically-conscious family\, but after the long and contentious presidential campaign of 2016\, this post-election turkey get-together threatens to be a disaster in the making. One American family and their binds of marriage\, parenthood\, brother and sisterhood will all be tested as the family members are challenged to answer the ultimate question\, which comes first\, party\, candidate\, country or family? \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES: \nARTHUR HOLDEN – (Early 60’s). Family patriarch. Old school traditionalist. Still\, open-minded. Steely. Still\, with a soft side. \nBEV HOLDEN – (Early 60’s). The real family boss. Simple but wise. Path-of-least resistance peacemaker personality. Hidden rebel. \nDEBORAH HOLDEN GONZALEZ – (Early to mid 30’s). Daughter. Liberal firebrand\, passionate to the point of neuroses. Glass half-empty. \nROBERT HOLDEN – (Mid 30’s). Son. Conservative. Republican. Gay. \nSARAH HOLDEN – (Later 20’s). Baby of the family. Bernie Sanders acolyte. Socially engaged. Still\, a realist. \nHECTOR GONZALEZ – (Mid-30’s). Husband to Deborah. Progressive liberal. Less fiery than his wife. Glass half-full. \nMALIK HENDERSON – (Later 20’s-Early 30’s). Husband to Sarah. Black. Very well-read. An anarchist at heart. Still\, playful\, humble. \n  \nMEN OVERBOARD by Rich Orloff \nSNYPOSIS: \nWhen you’re fighting for a child’s soul\, what rules apply? A New York Bar Mitzvah brings together three generation of men in a Jewish family: three middle-aged brothers who have taken different paths (becoming a politician\, a therapist and a Buddhist monk)\, their elderly patriarch\, and a precocious 13-year-old boy who doubts he’s ready to be a man. Added to this mix is the boy’s Bar Mitzvah tutor\, an attractive Hungarian woman who has a past and possibly a future with the boy’s therapist uncle. MEN OVERBOARD is my boldest mix of comedy and drama as it explores\, “What makes a man?” \nCASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES: \nERNIE SILVER – (70’s or older). An old man\, father of three \nDOUG SILVER – (Mid-40’s). Ernie’s middle son\, a psychotherapist \nJAY SILVER – (Early 40’s). Ernie’s youngest son\, a Buddhist monk\, \nROBERT SILVER – (Late 40’s). Ernie’s oldest son\, a Congressional candidate. \nABRAHAM SILVER – (13). Robert’s son and Ernie’s only grandchild. \nEVA FUZESI – (Mid-30’s). Abraham’s Bar Mitzvah tutor\, from Hungary.
