LBP NEW WORKS FESTIVAL 2018

About the Play

Run: Friday and Saturday at 8pm

Synopsis

LBP NEW WORKS FESTIVAL 2018

Company: LBP New Works Committee producing

Tickets: $10

DESCRIPTION:

The annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a staged reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and audience talk back.

THIS YEAR’S WINNING PLAYS:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING by Tim Boland – Stage Reading Friday, March 23

SNYPOSIS:

Full-length play set on Thanksgiving Day, 2016, two weeks after the highly divisive U.S. presidential election. A Michigan-state (Blue state turned Red!) married couple, two conservative Republican parents, are holding their annual Thanksgiving dinner for their three adult children coming back to Jackson, Michigan (often branded as the birthplace of the Republican party): their first-born, a liberal firebrand Hillary-supporting daughter, along with their middle child, a gay Republican son, and the baby of the family, a Sandernista democratic socialist daughter. Annual Thanksgiving family gatherings are normally fraught with enough anxiety for this diverse and politically-conscious family, but after the long and contentious presidential campaign of 2016, this post-election turkey get-together threatens to be a disaster in the making. One American family and their binds of marriage, parenthood, brother and sisterhood will all be tested as the family members are challenged to answer the ultimate question, which comes first, party, candidate, country or family?

MEN OVERBOARD by Rich Orloff – Stage Reading Saturday, March 24

SNYPOSIS:

When you’re fighting for a child’s soul, what rules apply? A New York Bar Mitzvah brings together three generation of men in a Jewish family: three middle-aged brothers who have taken different paths (becoming a politician, a therapist and a Buddhist monk), their elderly patriarch, and a precocious 13-year-old boy who doubts he’s ready to be a man. Added to this mix is the boy’s Bar Mitzvah tutor, an attractive Hungarian woman who has a past and possibly a future with the boy’s therapist uncle. MEN OVERBOARD is my boldest mix of comedy and drama as it explores, “What makes a man?”

The Work Shops:

“Silence. Space. Storytelling. Connection.”
12:00 P.M.-2:00 P.M.
$20
Connecting and telling stories come to us much easier when we slow down. In this workshop, learn the power of silence and how to use the space around us to connect with our scene partners in an improvised story. We’ll learn how to give focus, develop presence and awareness, and even discover the time to speak. Discover skills that are as relevant in our workplace and relationships as they are in improv storytelling.
About the Instructor
Lauren Baumbauer is a director and manager for Modjeska Unscripted Theater in Lake Forest, CA. Having studied extensively at Spectacles Improv Engine in Fullerton and the Impro Studio in Los Angeles, Lauren’s teaching focuses on narrative storytelling and discovering unique forms of improvised expression.
“Etch the Sketch”
12:00 P.M.-2:00 P.M.
$20
Comedy sketches are tricky beasts to wrangle, especially for such a short time. For this workshop, students are asked to bring in a 2-5 page first draft of a sketch and/or 1-2 pages of ideas and premises. We’ll derive our lessons from these, focusing on character, how to write for performance, and how to adapt sketches for both stage and film.
About the Instructor
Chris Mertan is a writer, director, and member of The Upperclassmen, host troupe for Long Beach Sketch/Prov. Over the decade, he has produced and staged countless sketches for both stage and screen in the greater Orange County and Long Beach area. Chris hold a degree in writing from UCSD, and specialized in drama and film.
“Character Study”
with Special Guest Instructor Andy Goldberg
3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M.
$20
Character counts, especially since it’s one of the foundations of great improv. Great characters yield great results, and in this workshop, we’ll explore the tools that help craft memorable characters to get these results. As useful for the actor and writer as for anyone simply looking to think on their feet a little better, “Character Study” shows that you can think creatively with confidence.
About the Instructor
Andy Goldberg is an actor, educator, and founder of Off the Wall, LA’s longest-running improv troupe. He is also the author of Improv Comedy, the seminal textbook originally published by Samuel French, and has either taught or performed with Robin Williams, Larry David, Bonnie Hunt, Fred Willard, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and hundreds more.

COMPANY STATEMENT:

Established in 2010, the Upperclassmen is one of America’s only (barely) functioning comedy and improv troupes that keeps a lawyer and registered nurse on retainer.
