HAIR

About the Play

Director: Rovin Jay
Run: Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm

It has a surprising if perhaps unintentional charm, its high spirits are contagious, and its young zestfulness makes it difficult to resist.
Synopsis

Rediscover the wonders, pains, and joys within “the age of Aquarius.” HAIR celebrates the sixties counterculture in all its barefoot, long-haired, bell-bottomed, beaded and fringed glory. With an infectiously energetic rock beat, the show explores ideas of identity, community, global responsibility, and peace, as it remains as relevant as ever, examining what it means to be a young person in a changing world.  Once a mirror held up to the explosive and experimental life of young people in the 1960s, HAIR now provides all ages a microscopic view of the eternal struggle of youth finding their voice.

This Playhouse production will feature full frontal nudity, simulated drug use, adult language, and other adult situations. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

THE HATMAKER’S WIFE

About the Play

Director: Shinshin Yuder Tsai
Run: Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm

What makes The Hatmaker's Wife a success is its dexterity and fluidity. Yee's characters and story lines jump back and forth not only between the realistic and the fantastical but also between gut-laughter funny and hit-you-in-the-gut sad — and they do so with astounding truthfulness
Synopsis

In Lauren Yee’s comic fairy tale inspired by the Jewish folktales of Sholem Aleichem, we are introduced to a young woman who moves in with her boyfriend expecting domestic bliss. Instead, she finds discomfort, displacement, and the realization that she needs more.  In this witty and often deeply touching comedy, she finds assistance and guidance from the unlikeliest of sources — a wall in her new home. As the wall shares with her the magical tale of an old hat-maker and his long-suffering wife, this sweet and surreal story bends time and space to redefine the idea of family, home, and true love itself.

EXIT, PURSUED BY A BEAR

About the Play

Director: James Rice
Run: Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm

If the Coen Brothers decided to set a feminist revenge tale in Atlanta and sprinkle it with Dixie Chicks pixie dust, it might look something like EXIT, PURSUED BY A BEAR, a raucous comedy of friendship, domestic abuse, and performance-as-catharsis.
Synopsis

If the Coen Brothers created a mashup of  Shakespearean revenge tale and outrageous comedy, it would be EXIT, PURSED BY A BEAR. Join Nan as she forces her abusive husband, Kyle, to watch her and her over-the-top cheerleading friend, Simon, reenact scenes from their horrible relationship as he’s tied to his La-Z-Boy.  Will Nan be able to make Kyle see the painful truths of their marriage, or will she leave him to be mauled by a bear at the end to her performance piece?  Come see the playwright of Silent Sky, Lauren Gunderson, as she explores the comedy, the pain, and the chance of being eaten, in this comic gem of a play.

CAST LIST:
  • Fiona Austin (NAN CARTER)
  • Michael Kaye (KYLE CARTER)
  • Deva Marie Gregory (SWEETHEART)
  • Lee Samuel Tanng (SIMON BEAUFORT)

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

Nan has decided to teach her abusive husband Kyle a lesson. With the help of her friend Simon (acting as her emotional — and actual — cheerleader) and a stripper named Sweetheart, she tapes Kyle to a chair and forces him to watch as they reenact scenes from their painful past. In the piece de resistance, they plan to cover the room in meat and honey so Kyle will be mauled by a bear. Through this night of emotional trials and ridiculous theatrics, Nan and Kyle are both freed from their past in this smart, dark revenge comedy.
