Description of the Festival:

The annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and an audience talk back.

About the Shows:

THE ONE GOOD THING OR “ARE YOU PATRICK SWAYZE?” – Brothers Jamie and Tommy share a remote farmhouse on the cliffs of the Irish Sea. One morning Jamie makes an astonishing declaration. He announces that he is dead – and now a ghost. Tommy, naturally, is unconvinced, maintaining that his brother’s delusion is caused by the grief Jamie has suffered since their mother’s death. Through humor and pathos, the play explores themes of love, loss, and redemption, culminating in the discovery that the eternal exists in their fraternal bond. The One Good Thing… should fuel speculation about what is real and what is imaginary. However, ultimately, it should touch the heart.

JUDGEMENT OF THE EYE – Han Van Meegeren, a struggling Dutch artist, realizes his skill is forgeries and sell millions of dollars of fake art. When Germany invades, the SS compel him to sell paintings to Goering, and he makes millions more. At the end of the war, he is accused of selling national treasure to the enemy and is to be executed. He claims the paintings are fakes and to prove it he will paint another. His story exposes the contradictions of how we perceive and value art, in a tale so absurd, and with a character so flawed, it can only be true.
