SHORT SYNOPSIS:

An unromantically romantic comedy where struggles with addiction, friendship, love, betrayal, and the challenges of adulthood are at the center of the story.  Jackie is just out of prison and trying to stay clean.  He is also still in love with his coke-addicted childhood sweetheart, Veronica.  Ralph D. is Jackie’s too-smooth, slightly slippery AA sponsor.  He is married to the bitter and disaffected Victoria, who, in turn, has the hots for Jackie.  And then there’s Julio, Jackie’s cousin . . . a stand-up kind of guy.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

VERONICA (Latina F, mid 20s to mid. 30s): Looking for a Latina female to play a New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent.  Race open.  Attractive.  Sexy.  Drug addict.  Fast talking, wild, and rough around the edges.

JACKIE (Latino M, mid. 20s to mid. 30s): Looking for a Latino male to play a New Yorker of Puerto Rican decent.  Race open.  Veronica’s boyfriend.  Attractive.  Ex-Con, a recovering addict, hot-tempered and capable of violence and yet good-hearted and vulnerable.

RALPH D. (M, mid. 40s): Race and ethnicity open.  Jackie’s AA Sponsor.  A recovered addict.  Inspirational, persuasive, smooth-talking, and a ladies’ man.  Selfish and manipulative.

VICTORIA (F, late 30s – early 40s): Race and ethnicity open.  Ralph D.’s wife.  She feels trapped in an unhappy marriage and feels her best years are behind her.  Bitter.  Hurt has turned to anger.

Please prepare and bring sheet music for 16 bars of a contemporary rock song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided. Also be prepared to move.

Callbacks:

For callbacks be prepared to improvise, move, learn some choreography and songs from the show, and read scene sides.

SHORT SYNOPSIS:  

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and multiple Tony Awards & Drama Desk Awards, RENT based on Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme, is a legendary rock opera that chronicles a year in the life of a group of friends living in Alphabet City, a bohemian enclave in the East Village. Set during the height of the Aids Epidemic in NYC in 1989, the physical and emotional complications of the disease permeate the lives of this group of artists and musicians while they experience desperation, loneliness, loss, lust, and love all while coping with survival. Together they discover how to fight for salvation and redemption all while striving to maintain the inner ever-kindling flame of what it means to be an artist, to live for the moment, and to build a life of their dreams. 

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

NOTES: Performers of all ethnic, racial, sexual and gender identities and backgrounds are encouraged, needed and welcomed. 

Transgender, Gender-Nonconforming, Non-Binary Actors are welcomed and encouraged to submit for any and all of the roles below with the understanding that there are individual characters that may identify as a woman or man.

RENT features many adult themes, including sex, drug use, profanity, and same-sex intimacy. Due to the adult nature of RENT, all actors must be over 18 at the time of auditions.

THE PRINCIPLES:

ROGER DAVIS (M, 20-35, A4-F2, OPEN TO ALL) A musician/singer-songwriter who is a recovering drug addict living with HIV. Roger has mourned members of his community and is grieving the loss of his deceased former girlfriend. Roger longs for connection and meaning through his music. He is roommates with Mark in an abandoned loft space. (*Actively seeking actors with the ability to play/learn to play, some guitar.)

MARK COHEN (M, 20-35, G4-A2, OPEN TO ALL) A filmmaker and video artist who constantly seeks validation. He connects deeply with his roommate Roger and longs for the days when his group of friends were closer. In his struggles to find his place in the world, he often finds himself on the outside looking in. Mark comes from privilege but desires to understand his responsibility to himself and his community.

TOM COLLINS (M, 25-40, A4-F#2, OPEN TO ALL) A professor of technology at NYU that is grounded in anarchy and liberation, Tom Collins is smart, caring, and the backbone of his friend group. His chosen family is lifted by his positive and nurturing spirit. His warmth and empathic presence allows him to invite his friends to examine personal accountability. Tom used to be a roommate in the loft with Mark and Roger. He is also living with HIV. (*This role requires comfortability with learning and performing intimacy choreography including same-sex kissing and physical contact.)

BENJAMIN COFFIN III (M, 25-40, F#4-Bb2, OPEN TO ALL) Mark and Roger’s landlord and former roommate. Benny struggles to find connection with his former chosen family. He is constantly battling being a friend while pleasing his new in-laws. In spite of being seen as a sell out, Benny longs to know who he is and where he fits in his community.

JOANNE JEFFERSON (F, 25-40, E5-G3, BIPOC) A public interest lawyer who always fights for the underdog, Joanne comes from a conservative upper-class family. As an out and proud lesbian, she demands her own liberation. She is smart, purposeful, and grounded. She is dating Maureen Johnson. Joanne’s connection to Maureen brings her into an established chosen family where she discovers the power of being celebrated in your own community. (*This role requires comfortability with learning and performing intimacy choreography including same-sex kissing and  physical contact.)

ANGEL DUMOTT SCHUNARD (20-35, A4-3C, OPEN TO ALL) A vibrant street musician who radiates light, Angel moves through the world as a gender nonconforming human who is also living with HIV. Angel has an incredible spirit with a gift for inspiring human connection all while being a street fashion Icon and drag queen. Angel is magnetic and rooted in living for the moment. Angel meets and swiftly becomes Tom Collins’ partner, a connection that brings Angel into the chosen family group. Angel is the heart of the piece. (*Transgender, gender-nonconforming, non-binary actors are strongly encouraged to submit for this role with the understanding that the character identifies/moves within multiple gender representations. This role requires comfortability with learning and performing intimacy choreography including same-sex kissing and  physical contact.)

MIMI MARQUEZ (F, 18-35, E5-Eb3, LATINX/AFRO-LATINX/BIPOC) A dancer and sex worker. Mimi is a proud Latina woman determined to live in the moment She is a drug addict who is living with HIV. A young woman on a journey to find who she is and what she is fighting for. Mimi’s addiction and intentions are often at odds. She desperately tries to make the best of life in whatever way she can. Living in the same building as Roger and Mark, Mimi meets the friend group through her unexpected romantic connection to Roger and is forever changed by this chosen family. Her artistry is connected to her body and movement. 

MAUREEN JOHNSON (F, 20-35, F5-C4, OPEN TO ALL) A performance artist who is constantly raging and ready to fight. Maureen is full of well-intended passion and anarchist energies of which she pours into her art no matter the medium. She’s a former roommate of Roger, Mark, Collins and Benny. She completes the chosen family rounding out the space with intoxicating energy dripping with sexualized vigor. Maureen is queer and openly dating Joanne after recently breaking up with Mark. Bursting with confidence and a vivacious spirit, Maureen navigates how to be a less self-centered human that is accountable for their actions. Artistically speaking she is a radical and unexpected arts advocate. (*This role requires comfortability with learning intimacy choreography including same-sex kissing and  physical contact.)

THE ENSEMBLE:

MEMBERS OF EAST VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD (Any, 18+, all vocal ranges, OPEN TO ALL) The Ensemble of this world will be omnipresent on stage and is incredibly valuable and provides the foundation and full structure that holds and supports the stories RENT has to share. The auditions will be conducted with room for growth and adjustments as we meet the individuals who encompass our need to build a core family to tell this tale.

Seeking a diverse company of all ages, ethnicities, orientations, shapes, and sizes of seven core company members plus one possible swing/company member. Must be strong singers/movers, and all will likely play multiple characters(backups, dancers and party people of the Cat Scratch club, inhabitants of Alphabet City, carolers, police officers, homeless people, parents of Mark, Roger, Mimi, Joanne etc., the angel-ghost of April/Mark’s dead lover, vendors, support group, junkies, The Man, Alexi-Darling, Mr.Grey, Restaurant Man, Waiter, bohemians, Pastor.

SHORT SYNOPSIS:  

In one of Shakespeare’s most joyous comedies, As You Like It tells the story of the heroine Rosalind and her cousin Celia who are forced to flee for their lives from the court into the mysterious Forest of Arden while in disguise. Inside the forest Rosalind encounters her true love Orlando, her deposed father, and numerous other colorful characters. 

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

NOTE: Actively seeking all ethnicities for all roles.  Non-binary or gender nonconforming actors are encouraged to audition for the characters they identify with, regardless of the character gender.

ROSALIND (F, 18 – 29) A strong, young woman who’s independence and cleverness allow her to lead her cousin into the Forest of Arden under the guise of the male Ganymede. Hopelessly in love with Orlando yet still in disguise, she must test his love before she reveals herself.

ORLANDO (M, 18 – 29) The brave and tender youngest son of Sir Rowland de Bois whose eldest brother resents him. Orlando falls for Rosalind and can’t help but proclaim his love for her throughout the Forest of Arden.

CELIA (F, 18 – 25) Rosalind’s cousin and best friend and the daughter of Duke Frederick. Celia is more conventional than her cousin but still fiercely loyal. When her father casts out Rosalind, Celia abandons the wealth of the court and disguises herself as the poor peasant Aliena to join Rosalind in banishment.

TOUCHSTONE (M or F, 20s – 50s) The court jester accustomed to a life of status, he joins Rosalind and Celia in their banishment though frequently laments the country life. His quick wit and intelligence often put him at odds with the characters who understand that he is mocking them. Actor may play numerous other roles and must be able to differentiate them physically and vocally.

JAQUES (M, 20s – 50s) The melancholic nobleman who lives in the Forest under the usurped Duke Senior. Jaques is known for his intelligence and deep yet cynical contemplation. He recognizes “All the words a stage, And all the men and women merely players.” Actor may play numerous other roles and must be able to differentiate them physically and vocally. Actor will play Charles.

DUKE SENIOR (M, 40s – 60s) Banished by his paranoid brother, Duke Frederick, Senior now lives in the Forest of Arden where he embraces nature as his new teacher. He happily leads his followers with kindness and fairness but misses his daughter, Rosalind. Actor will also play Duke Frederick.

OLIVER (M, 20s – 30s) Orlando’s oldest brother. Oliver has refused his brother a proper education and resents Orlando for his charm and good nature. Oliver is not above dishonest means to rid himself of his brother.

SILVIUS (M or F, 20s – 30s) A young shepherd who is madly in love with Phoebe. Not deterred by the unrequited nature of his love, Silvius is steadfastly doing whatever Phoebe commands of him.

PHOEBE (F, 20s-30s) A rural young woman who does not return Silvius’s love but is immediately infatuated with Rosalind’s male disguise.

CORIN (M or F, 40s – 50s) An older shepherd who attempts to teach Silvius the ways of love. Though he is rarely listened to, Corin is quite wise. Actor will also play Adam, Martext, and Hymen.

AMIENS (M or F, 30s – 40s) A good natured follower of Duke Senior who savors his time in the Forest of Arden and enjoys the songs he and the Duke’s follower write. Actor will also play Jaques de Boyes and LeBeau.

AUDREY (F, 20s – 30s) A pleasant goatherd who agrees to marry Touchstone.

*Note: Some actors will be playing supporting roles in scenes as lords, attendants, foresters, etc. Also, some roles may be cast by actors of another gender than listed as above.

SHORT SYNOPSIS:  

A romantic comedy about loss, love, change and redemption, The Clean House is both whimsical and touching. A serious career-oriented doctor, Lane, has hired a quirky Brazilian maid. The only problem is that the maid, Matilde, hates to clean. Instead, she longs to be a comedienne. Lane is deserted by her husband, Charles, who leaves her for his mistress, Ana, a passionate, older Brazilian woman upon whom he recently performed a mastectomy. Sarah Ruhl’s enchanting play reminds us that there is humor and beauty to be found in life’s most unlikely messes.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

LANE (F, 40-60s, Ethnicity: OPEN) A doctor. She is devoted to order.

MATHILDE (F, 20s-early 30s, Ethnicity: LATINX or AFRO-LATINX) Lane’s Brazilian cleaning lady. She has a refined sense of deadpan. She is devoted to creating the perfect joke.  (Must be capable of performing/learning Brazilian-Portuguese accent/dialogue )

VIRGINIA (F, 40s-60s, Ethnicity: OPEN) Lane’s sister. She is devoted to cleaning.

CHARLES (M, 40s-60s. Ethnicity: OPEN) Lane’s husband. A compassionate surgeon. He is childlike underneath his white coat. In Act 1, Charles plays Mathilde’s father. (Movement experience is a plus. Must be comfortable with kissing/intimate scenes.)

ANA (F, 50-60s, Ethnicity: LATINX or AFRO-LATINX) An Argentinian woman. She is impossibly charismatic. In Act 1, she plays Mathilde’s mother. She is older than Lane. (Must be capable of performing/learning Argentinian accent/Spanish dialogue. Movement experience is a plus. Must be comfortable with kissing/intimate scenes.)

This heartfelt musical comedy follows an eclectic group of six teens who compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Eight spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

NOTE: We encourage performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, abilities, and ages to audition. 

CHIP TOLENTINO (M, 16+ – Able to play a 6th grade speller) The reigning spelling champion of Putnam County. Slightly athletic and social, he expects things to come easily to him. This role requires some sustained high notes, up to a sustained high A in his solo number. (Also plays Jesus.) Vocal Range: Tenor to B (Vocal Range C4-B5)

LOGAINNE SCHWARTZANDGRUBENNIERE (F, 16+ to play Middle School Aged Character) Younger than most bee participants, she is driven by internal and external pressure—but above all else, a desire to when to please her two fathers. Speaks with a lisp. Vocal Range: Alto G to Eb (Vocal Range A3-F5)

LEAF CONEYBEAR (M/F/NON-BI, 16+ to play Middle School Aged Character) A second alternate to the bee, never expected to compete. Home-schooled with many siblings, everything about the public bee is an adventure to them. They have severe Attention Deficit Disorder and his best friend is his finger puppet. Vocal Range: Baritone to G (Vocal Range A3-A5)

WILLIAM BARFEE (M, 16+ to play Middle School Aged Character) Has a host of health problems and a lot to prove. Loud and combative—becomes the bully to avoid being picked out by others, but eventually warms up. A strong comedic role. Vocal Range: Tenor to Bb (Vocal Range E4-B5)

MARCY PARKERS (F, 16+ to play Middle School Aged Character) The ultimate over-achiever, Marcy has never been given another option. She comes from a family where excellence is expected and so simply produced. Role requires (ANY/ALL SPECIAL ABILITIES) various tricks—baton twirling, cartwheels, splits, etcetera. Vocal Range: Mezzo to Eb (Vocal Range C4-E5)

OLIVE OSTROVSKY (F, 16+ to play Middle School Aged Character) A word-lover, Olive has a fairly quiet life, a result of often-absent parents and being an only child. She spends most of her time with the dictionary, which brings her comfort with its vastness of wonder. This role requires a strong belter contained in a shy and sweet young girl. Vocal Range: Mezzo A to high G (Vocal Range B3-F5)

RONA LISA PERRETTI (F, 30’s) Putnam County’s long-time spelling bee hostess, a local realtor, and the winner of the 3rd annual bee. This is Rona’s day to be queen, and her own when is sadly the highlight of her life still. (Also plays Olive’s Mom.) This role requires a strong belter. Vocal Range: Mezzo up to A (Vocal Range B3-F5)

VICE PRINCIPAL DOUGLAS PANCH (M, 30’s) The vice principal of a local middle school, he is frustrated with his life. Forced to be a substitute co-host of the bee, he finds the whole thing odd, but attempts to play along to impress Rona, which he has a crush. (minimal singing) (NO SOLOS, THOUGH REQUESTED TO SING WHEN APPLICABLE.)

MITCH MAHONEY (M, 18-25) With a bouncer’s physique and demeanor, Mitch appears an odd choice for the bee’s “comfort counselor,” but it is part of his community service. (Also plays Dan’s Dad and Olive’s Dad.) Vocal Range: Gospel/ Baritone to A (Vocal Range E4-A5)
