HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater
Oct. 12 – Nov. 16, 2024
Text by John Cameron Mitchell, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Trask
Directed by Angela I. Cruz

Hedwig Schmidt wants her due. After having to change who she was to leave East Germany with an American GI who promises to take her to the states if she changes her sex, Hedwig is left in a Kansas trailer park with regret, a bad operation, and what she calls an “Angry Inch.” She turns to music and meets a geeky boy named Tommy whom she falls for.  But he ends up stealing her songs and achieving rock star fame.  What’s to be done but to become a rock goddess herself!  This Tony and Obie award-winning show is part rock concert, part stand-up routine, and part exploration into what it means to be loved; not only by others, but by yourself.

THE PILLOWMAN
Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater
Aug. 31 – Sept. 28, 2024
By Martin McDonagh
Directed by Carl daSilva

A serial killer is on the loose, and several children have gone missing.  But when a writer in this unnamed totalitarian state is interrogated, the police think the gruesome content of their short stories and the similarities to the murders are too close to be a coincidence. Is art a crime, and can story-telling be dangerous? In this extremely dark horror thriller by Martin McDonagh, you may just think so! Exhilarating and thoroughly startling, THE PILLOWMAN is a gripping and unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art itself.

By Lynn Nottage
Directed by Maisha Azadi Sebastiany

Keenly observed and filled with warm humor and tremendous heart, SWEAT tells the story of a group of friends who have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets, and laughs while working together on the factory floor in the Rust Belt of Reading, Pennsylvania. But when layoffs and picket lines begin to chip away at their trust, the friends find themselves pitted against each other in a heart-wrenching fight to stay afloat. This Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Lynn Nottage is a masterful depiction of the forces that divide and conquer us, where there’s humor, abundant humility, and a story that never feels less than authentic.

LOOT

Synopsis
LOOT
Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater
June 8 – July 6, 2024
By Joe Orton
Directed by Allen Sewell

The bank next to the funeral parlour has been robbed! LOOT is Joe Orton’s masterpiece of dark comedy where we follow the fortunes of two young thieves – Dennis, an undertaker at the funeral parlour, and Hal, his sometime lover, whose Mum just died. When Inspector Truscott turns up, they need a place to hide the loot.  But with the money in Mum’s coffin, there’s no place for Mum, whose body keeps reappearing at the most inopportune times. Aided and abetted by Mum’s former nurse, Fay, and trying to put one over on Hal’s gullible father, the duo prove that nothing is sacred in a farce that seethes with black, baleful mirth.

MEN ON BOATS
Produced by JD Theatricals in collaboration with the Long Beach Playhouse.
Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater
April 27 – May 25, 2024
By Jaclyn Backhaus
Directed by Meredith Miranda

MEN ON BOATS is the true(ish) history of the 1869 expedition of the Grand Canyon when ten explorers, in four boats, lead by a one-armed captain, set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. In an off the canyon-walls funny comedy, the stalwartness, the selfishness, the cockiness, and the cluelessness of this crew of insane yet loyal adventurers drips with satire as some of the roles are gender swapped.  This is a rollicking adventure that turns the American myth of man-ifest destiny on end and challenges the notion of who gets to make history with respect to its bold if fallible pioneers.
