This annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays (one local to southern California, one non-local) to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and an audience talk back.

As it is a stage reading, there will only be 3-4 rehearsals, and actors will not need to memorize their scripts.  The stage reading of their show will only happen one night, and there will be a talk back with the audience after the reading.

SHOW 1:  THE ONE GOOD THING

By Joe Bravaco

Stage Reading on Friday, March 28, 2025

Directed by Katherine White

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

Two brothers in Enniskeel, a small coastal town on the Irish Sea in Fingal County, Ireland have deep heartfelt chats about life and loss, in the way that Irish men do; with sarcasm, teasing, and brotherly love. Sometimes we wait to long to tell people how we feel and these brothers go on that journey together.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

JAMIE (M, Early 30’s) a primary school teacher, gay, on the thin side, maybe losing some hair. An open, honest face. (Irish accent.)

TOMMY (M, Late 20’s) Jamie’s brother, an artist, married, handsome, more robust, a ruddy complexion. (Irish accent.)

SHOW 2:  JUDGEMENT OF THE EYE

Description of the Festival:

The annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and an audience talk back.

About the Shows:

THE ONE GOOD THING OR “ARE YOU PATRICK SWAYZE?” – Brothers Jamie and Tommy share a remote farmhouse on the cliffs of the Irish Sea. One morning Jamie makes an astonishing declaration. He announces that he is dead – and now a ghost. Tommy, naturally, is unconvinced, maintaining that his brother’s delusion is caused by the grief Jamie has suffered since their mother’s death. Through humor and pathos, the play explores themes of love, loss, and redemption, culminating in the discovery that the eternal exists in their fraternal bond. The One Good Thing… should fuel speculation about what is real and what is imaginary. However, ultimately, it should touch the heart.

Each performance is a completely improvised, full-length play with a whirlwind of zany characters, unexpected twists, and hilarious misunderstandings, all tailored by the audience’s suggestions. Think of it as a love letter to the chaotic charm of classic screwball comedies like “Bringing Up Baby” and “His Girl Friday,” where quick wit and slapstick reign supreme. As the cast dives into offbeat scenarios and playful banter, no two nights will ever be the same. Whether it’s a mistaken heirloom or a wild chase for a missing pet, expect the unexpected in this delightfully unpredictable romp!

Description:

TELEGRAPH’S #1 Theatre Pick, Edinburgh Fringe 2017

Based on Eleanor Ramrath Garner’s best-selling memoir, this internationally acclaimed adaptation—performed by her granddaughter, Ingrid Garner—details Eleanor’s youth as an American caught in WWII Berlin.

During the Great Depression, 9-year-old Eleanor’s family moves from the U.S. to Germany in pursuit of work. But when war breaks out as they are crossing the Atlantic, return to America becomes impossible. While desperate for Allied victory, the family faces bombings, Gestapo threats, the final battle for Berlin, and the perils of Russian occupation.

Punctuated with humor and accompanied by cinematic sound and video, Garner embodies her ancestors in this coming-of-age odyssey, delivering an account of war more relevant than ever.
