In Sondheim’s dark masterpiece, an unjustly exiled barber returns seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His path crosses with Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop. Todd’s thirst for blood inspires Mrs. Lovett to introduce a secret ingredient to her wares, with the result of London lining up for her now delicious meat pies.  As the body count rises, this tasty, thrilling, theatrical treat has simultaneously shocked, awed, and delighted audiences across the world.

Delusional and joyously happy, Miss Jenkins paid little attention to her critics, supported by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was. But when the chance to play Carnegie Hall comes up, will it be the ultimate triumph, or proof that her vision of musical glory was only in her own mind?

In THE CRUCIBLE, Arthur Miller created one of the most acclaimed plays in the American theatrical canon. Set during the turmoil of the Salem witch trials, the story focuses on a young farmer, his wife, and a young servant woman who causes the wife’s arrest for witchcraft. The farmer brings her to court to admit the lie, but instead finds himself accused of witchcraft, along with a host of others, as fear and opportunism consume the town. Written during the height of the Communist “witch hunts,” this exciting drama about Puritan hysteria is a gripping and timely parable of our contemporary society.

It’s 1969, the peak of the Black Power movement, in August Wilson’s mature and intimate take on those turbulent times, TWO TRAINS RUNNING. Memphis Lee’s coffee shop lies in Pittsburgh’s Hill District and serves as a hangout for a host of regulars: Wolf, a numbers runner; Risa, a laconic waitress tired of unwanted attention; Sterling, just released for bank robbery; and Hambone, who can’t let go that he was cheated out of a ham.  When the city threatens to raze the restaurant in the name of “urban renewal,” can the lofty ideals of the sixties support the reality of Black hardship in a community on the brink of change?

As the weather turns and the group is cut off from the mainland, what do the lines of a sinister nursery rhyme about “Ten Little Soldier Boys” mean, and can someone prevent a bloodbath before each of the guests is brutally murdered? A perfect combination of thriller and detective story, you’ll find that you cannot escape from its harrowing conclusion.

Holiday favorite A CHRISTMAS CAROL returns for its annual incarnation in this quick-paced, highly theatrical retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic tale. The ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future show Ebenezer Scrooge the poverty of his miserly ways and the blessings that come with generosity. Can they convince him to change before it’s too late? Come spend time with the characters you’ve come to love – Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and of course the irascible miser himself.  This yearly tradition will be the Christmas ghost story needed to set you and your loved ones on the path to holiday cheer.

SHORT SYNOPSIS:  

Seeking inspiration for his next novel, author Charles Condomine organizes a séance at his home by inviting the strange medium, Madam Arcati. Not believing in the supernatural, Charles is unpleasantly surprised when his former wife is summoned, causing a strain on his current marriage. His first wife, Elvira, seems happy to stay around, but she has more up her ghostly sleeves than she lets on. 

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

EDITH (F, 18-20’s): She is the new maid for the Condomines. Her nervousness makes her awkward and unprofessional. She also has a secret affinity towards the supernatural. (Role requires a British Accent.)

RUTH CONDOMINE (F, Mid 30’s): A sophisticated, intelligent, demanding, and practical woman. Underneath her confident demeanor, there is a hint of insecurity of being the second wife of Charles Condomine. (Role requires a British Accent.)

CHARLES CONDOMINE (M, 40’s): A witty, refined novelist. He has a quick temper, but also can allow others to push him around. He was married to Elvira before she died and is now married to Ruth. (Role requires a British Accent.)

DR. GEORGE BRADMAN (M, 40’s-50’s): A kind and skeptical doctor that plays along with the Condomine’s séance. Husband of Violet. (Role requires a British Accent.)

MRS. VIOLET BRADMAN (F, 40’s-50’s): An excitable, kind, and somewhat oblivious woman who has a habit of sticking her foot in her mouth. Wife of George. (Role requires a British Accent.)

MADAM ARCATI (F, 50’s-70’s): An eccentric, lively, and unusual spiritualist. She takes her role as a medium with the upmost sincerity. Her fashion is as wild as her personality. (Role requires a British Accent.)

ELVIRA CONDOMINE (F, Late 20’s-Early 30’s): A bold, free-spirited, tricky and diabolical woman. She died relatively young and has come from beyond the grave to retrieve her once-husband, Charles. (Role requires a British Accent.)

SHORT SYNOPSIS:  

Adapted from the well-known horror motion picture by George A. Romero and John Russo, set in the fictional town of Evans City, Pennsylvania, in 1968. There are local news reports of the dead rising from grave, and the police department is quickly overrun- with reports of ghouls and the town’s people are powerless to stop flesh-eating zombies. Our leading couple, BEN and BARBARA must hide out from undead in a farmhouse with a couple, HARRY and HELEN COOPER and their daughter, KAREN, for the time being, but can they or anyone be trusted?

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

NOTE: All roles are open to any ethnicity unless specifically listed (BEN & BARBARA.)  Long Beach Playhouse encourages actors of all backgrounds, gender identities, and abilities to audition.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is a horror themed stage production that will feature undead creatures and simulated blood, brains, and guts.  You should make sure you are comfortable with the subject matter and style of the show before auditioning.

BEN (M, 18-40, African American): Dynamic and strong; leader type.

BARBARA (F, 18-30, Caucasian): Frightened yet resilient; at first dazed by what is happening.

JOHNNY: (M, 18-30): Barbara’s brother and a bit of a jerk.  Later gets turned into a ghoul.

HARRY COOPER (M, 30-65): Gruff and old-fashioned, husband to Helen.  Out for himself and his family.

HELEN COOPER (F, 30-65): Reactionary and frightened, wife to Harry. Is more reasonable and cooperative than her husband.

KAREN COOPER (F, 12-21 to play young girl): Daughter of Helen and Harry; seems innocent, but has a dangerous secret.

TOM (M, 16-21 to play teenager) Teenager, boyfriend to Judy. Wants to help, but ends up an innocent victim.

JUDY (F, 16-21 to play teenager) Teenager, girlfriend to Tom.  Is deeply devoted, but ends up an innocent victim.

NEWS ANCHOR (M or F, 20-65): Strong and assertive; trying to come to grips with what is happening.

FIELD NEWS ANCHOR- (M or F, 20-65): Struggling to be famous; trying to come to grips with what is happening.

DR. GRIMES (F, 20-65): Scientist determined to learn what is going on; this side of bizarre or eccentric.

CHIEF McCLELLAND (M or F, 20-65):, County Sheriff – typical movie police officer.

VINCE (M, 18-28): Chief McClelland’s Deputy; good with a rifle.

RUSS/GHOUL 1 (M, 18-65): Chief McClelland’s Deputy, then ghoulish and full of death.

SALLY/GHOUL 2 (F, 21-65): Server when living and a ghoul when dead.

CEMETERY GHOUL (M, 18-65): Quiet, unassuming yet dead; non-speaking, just moaning.
