This annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays (one local to southern California, one non-local) to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and an audience talk back.

As it is a stage reading, there will only be 3-4 rehearsals, and actors will not need to memorize their scripts.  The stage reading of their show will only happen one night, and there will be a talk back with the audience after the reading.

SHOW 1:  AS WE LIKE IT

By Oded Gross

Stage Reading on Friday, March 27, 2026

Directed by Noah Wagner

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

As We Like It follows the story of a woman named Rose, who tries to motivate her family to rehearse in the serenity and privacy of the woods a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It to be performed at the wedding of the Duke, and his betrothed, the Fairy Queen. The only problem is there is no Fairy Queen. There is no Duke. They are not in a serene forest. This Midsummer Night’s / As You Like It delusion is Rose’s shield against a brutal reality she doesn’t wish to confront — she and her family are in hiding from the Nazis in the grim forests of Poland during World War 2. Her theatrical fantasy is a shield against unbearable reality, but her family fears her delusion may get them killed. The play explores the danger and necessity of self-made fictions and asks when stories protect us and when they put everything at risk.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

ROSE (F, 20s): A young Jewish woman.

AVRAM (M, 40s): Rose’s uncle.

MIRIAM (F, late teens): Avram’s daughter.

IDIS (F, 30s): A Jewish woman.

ROLAND (M, 20s): A wanderer; Kurt’s brother.

KURT (M, 20s): A wanderer; Roland’s brother.

Description:

The Club of Broken Fasts is a madcap take on the 1985 John Hughes classic, rendered in Shakespearian verse. You know the story: Brian the Brain, Claire the Princess, Andrew the Jock, Allison the Madwoman, and Bender the Wretch are all stuck in Saturday detention under the not-entirely-benign watch of Vice Principal Vernon. Together, they spend the day joking, musing, fighting, kissing, flouting authority, and, hopefully, growing up. Through elevated language and spectacular design melding iconic ’80s looks with Elizabethan sensibilities, The Club of Broken Fasts transforms this classic coming-of-age tale into a dramatic stage comedy fit for the Globe itself!

Or if you prefer, in verse:

It’s forty years since first we came to see

The work of teen movie auteur John Hughes.

See it re-writ in verse, with endless glee!

You know the story, though the words are new:

Brain, princess, jock, madwoman, and a wretch,

One Saturday, sit in their school detain’d;

And, ere the strike of four, all rules reject,

Their secrets, nay, their very souls laid plain.

But one day’s liv’d within our humble show,

Yet in that day, such marvels come to pass

That something more of life you’ll come to know

When you behold the Club of Broken Fasts!

WOLVES AT THE DOOR follows Grace and Gavin, who lost their daughter, Lucy, to gun violence. The gunman committed a mass shooting in an ‘incel’ styled revenge plot. Lucy, at a dance class nearby, was collateral damage. While grieving, Grace is bombarded by a stream of visitors, all who seem to want to exploit her in some manner. Meanwhile, she and Gavin grapple with their own relationship woes, as one of them wants to heal and one isn’t ready to move on. The play flips back and forth from the past where we see what set the shooter on his path, and the present where Grace tries to come to terms with the aftermath.

Description:

The Humorist Mark Twain offers a mirror to human nature – one that repeats patterns throughout history. Twain’s words, written 140-165 years ago, easily apply to today’s issues of government, racism, religion, and the human condition. In this one-person performance, Haven draws from Mark Twain’s books, journals, lectures, and essays to create sharp social commentary with comedic and critical storytelling. The goal is simple: to promote deep introspection; sometimes with wit and humor, others with pathos and empathy.

Company Statement:

Haven Productions is dedicated to igniting and sustaining a deep curiosity in theater as a transformative art form. We believe the stage is more than entertainment: It is a powerful lens through which truth is revealed, and the complexities of the human condition are explored. Through bold storytelling, thought-provoking performances, and a commitment to artistic excellence, Haven Productions strives to create experiences that inspires reflection, sparks dialogue, and connects audiences to the universal themes that shape our lives.

Description:

“Nodding Off in Church” unfolds on Easter Sunday in Sherwood, Arkansas, as the Johnson family gathers under one roof. Between the morning service and Sunday dinner, old tensions and quiet grief simmer beneath the surface. Elice Johnson, the family matriarch, leans on her faith to hold everyone together, but her adult children wrestle with doubt, disappointment, and what belief means in their own lives. As memories of their late brother Emmanuel linger, conversations about love, loss, and religion push the family to confront the difference between inherited faith and lived experience.

Company Statement:

Nodding Off in Church marks the first official production under our company, and we couldn’t think of a better place to bring it to life than the Long Beach Playhouse. I had the honor of performing here last year in August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, an experience I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. To now return as both creator and director is a full-circle moment I’m deeply grateful for. With this company, our goal is simple: to tell stories that spark conversation. We want to explore the uncomfortable, the honest, and the human because those conversations are what we believe bring us closer together.
