SHORT SYNOPSIS:

Set in 1965 England just as capital punishment is abolished, the play follows Harry Wade, the country’s second-best executioner, now a pub landlord in Oldham.  When a menacing stranger named Mooney arrives, his presence triggers the disappearance of Harry’s daughter, forcing Harry into a dark, comedic, and brutal showdown regarding the true nature of justice.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

HARRY (M, 50s to 60s; character of British Caucasian decent): He is bombastic, authoritative, and often a bully.  He takes immense pride in Being England’s “second-best” executioner in the country, though he is clearly jealous of the number one. (Role requires a British accent.)

ALICE (F, 50s to 60s; character of British Caucasian decent): Harry’s resilient and no-nonsense wife.  She helps with the pub and serves as a grounded counterpoint to Harry’s arrogance, though she often bears the brunt of his insults and dismissive behavior. (Role requires a British accent.)

SHIRLEY (F, 18 – 25 to play 15; character of British Caucasian decent): Their 15-year-old daughter often described as “mopey” and “moody”.  She is shy and sensitive, seeking her own voice while living under her parents’ dominating presence. (Role requires a British accent.)

SYD (M, 40s – 60; character of British Caucasian decent):  Harry’s former assistant executioner who was fired for “sexual impropriety” involving a corpse. He is mousy, comical, and somewhat bumbling, carrying a mix of shame and a desire for revenge against Harry. (Role requires a British accent.)

MOONEY (M, Thirties; character of British Caucasian decent): A mysterious and menacing young Londoner who arrives at the pub. He is secretive, calculating, manipulative and fast-talking.  He disrupts the pub’s routine with a veiled sense of danger. (Role requires a British accent.)

PIERREPOINT (M, Late 60s to 70s; character of British Caucasian decent): England’s real-life most famous hangman and Harry’s professional rival. He makes a late but commanding appearance that highlights Harry’s petty insecurities by comparison. (Role requires a British accent.)

INSPECTOR FRY (M, 50s to 60s; character of British Caucasian decent): A local police inspector who is more interested in drinking at the pub than doing his job.  He has known Harry for a long time and tends to turn a blind eye to the pub’s goings-on. (Role requires a British accent.)

ARTHUR (M, 60s to 70s; character of British Caucasian decent):  An elderly, nearly deaf pub regular who needs everything repeated to him and often gets it wrong anyway. (Role requires a British accent.)

CHARLIE (M, 40s; character of British Caucasian decent): A loyal pub regular who often explains the ongoing conversations to Arthur. (Role requires a British accent.)

BILL (M, 40s; character of British Caucasian decent):  Another local patron who rounds out the sycophantic chorus of regulars that Harry orders around. (Role requires a British accent.)

CLEGG (M, 20s; character of British Caucasian decent):  An opportunistic baby-faced journalist who visits the pub to interview Harry about the end of capital punishment. (Role requires a British accent.)

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

Its 1999, (before kids had cell phones), and Kimberly has all the usual problems of a typical 16 year old; making friends at her new school, dealing with her dysfunctional family… and a rare genetic condition where she ages four and a half times faster than her peers. Feeling trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman, Kim meets Jeff, another young misfit at school, and an uncertain relationship develops between them. Soon her life goes “akimbo,” contending with a hypochondriac mother, a rarely sober father, a scam-artist aunt, her own mortality, and most terrifying of all, the possibility of first love. A dark comedy that gives a quirky twist to the term ‘coming of age story’.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

KIMBERLY LEVACO (F, 60+ to play 16 y.o.): Kimberly is sixteen but appears much older because of a rare (fictional) aging disorder. She’s intelligent, perceptive, and often wiser than the adults around her. She longs for normal teenage experiences: friends, romance, and a sense of belonging, but she’s also aware that her time is limited. The actor should be able to express both the physical presence of an older woman and the emotional energy of a teenager. (Intimacy Moment: This character shares a brief on-stage kiss with Jeff.)

BUDDY LEVACO (M, Mid 30s-40s): Kimberly’s father. A man with a gentle heart and a weak backbone. He drinks too much and uses humor to hide his sense of failure. Buddy is not cruel, but he’s unreliable and emotionally lost. He wants to do right by his family but lacks the maturity or stability to make lasting change. His love for Kimberly is genuine, but his inability to take responsibility often undermines it.

PATTIE LEVACO (F, Mid 30s – 40s): Kimberly’s mother: High-strung, self-centered, and constantly overwhelmed, Pattie has a hard time accepting reality. She masks her fear and guilt with sarcasm and self-pity. There’s love beneath her chaos, but she doesn’t know how to show it. This role requires solid comedic timing. Pattie is 8 months pregnant throughout the duration of the show. She has bandages wrapping up both hands, and walks with crutches for several scenes.

DEBRA (F, 30 – 40): Pattie’s sister and Kimberly’s aunt. Debra is unapologetically herself — bold, funny, and always scheming for her next move. An ex (and possibly future) con. Beneath her chaotic energy is a deep need for connection and belonging. She’s both comic relief and a surprising source of heart.

JEFF (M, 18 – 25 to play 16 y.o.): A classmate of Kimberly’s. Jeff is intelligent, quirky, and endearingly awkward. A lover of D&D and the “puzzleistic arts”.  He shares Kimberly’s sense of humor, and becomes her closest friend and potential love interest. His presence gives her a glimpse of a normal teenage experience. (Intimacy Moment: This character shares a brief on-stage kiss with Kimberly.)

NEW WORKS FESTIVAL INFORMATION:

This annual festival nurtures emerging and established playwrights to develop new scripts. Reading 100+ scripts a year, the New Works Literary Committee chooses two top plays (one local to southern California, one non-local) to receive a stage reading with critical feedback from professional theatre critics and an audience talk back.

As it is a stage reading, there will only be 3-4 rehearsals, and actors will not need to memorize their scripts.  The stage reading of their show will only happen one night, and there will be a talk back with the audience after the reading.

SHOW 1:  AS WE LIKE IT

By Oded Gross

Stage Reading on Friday, March 27, 2026

Directed by Noah Wagner

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

As We Like It follows the story of a woman named Rose, who tries to motivate her family to rehearse in the serenity and privacy of the woods a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It to be performed at the wedding of the Duke, and his betrothed, the Fairy Queen. The only problem is there is no Fairy Queen. There is no Duke. They are not in a serene forest. This Midsummer Night’s / As You Like It delusion is Rose’s shield against a brutal reality she doesn’t wish to confront — she and her family are in hiding from the Nazis in the grim forests of Poland during World War 2. Her theatrical fantasy is a shield against unbearable reality, but her family fears her delusion may get them killed. The play explores the danger and necessity of self-made fictions and asks when stories protect us and when they put everything at risk.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

ROSE (F, 20s): A young Jewish woman.

AVRAM (M, 40s): Rose’s uncle.

MIRIAM (F, late teens): Avram’s daughter.

IDIS (F, 30s): A Jewish woman.

ROLAND (M, 20s): A wanderer; Kurt’s brother.

KURT (M, 20s): A wanderer; Roland’s brother.
