William Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT

Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater

Sept. 2 – Sept. 30, 2023

By William Shakespeare

Directed by Michael Hernandez-Phillips

In one of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies, we are thrown into the depths of the Forest of Arden, only now it is the Central Park of the 1950s, filled street vendors and beatniks as Rosalind, Orlando, and a band of love-struck, eccentric characters flee the rigidness and paranoia of the 5th Avenue elite. As they engage in sibling rivalry, unrequited love, assassination plots, mistaken identity, and wrestling, this roller-coaster of emotions and errors will have you rooting for fools and pulling for redemption. With some of Shakespeare’s most memorable dialogue, As You Like It will allow you to escape the pressures of real life into the fantasy of romantic froth.

THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT

Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater

July 22 – Aug. 19, 2023

by Stephen Adly Guirgis

Directed by Carl daSilva

Fresh from prison and trying to stay clean and sober, Jackie must deal with the complications of a still-addicted girlfriend, his demanding sponsor, and an unwanted admirer in this funny and unvarnished look at a group of street-wise New Yorkers who make a simple love triangle look tame. Hugely popular, and a critical hit when it played on Broadway starring comedian Chris Rock, this “unromantically romantic comedy,” deals with issues as varied as love, addiction, friendship, trust, and deceit.  Recovery has never been funnier, or more heart-breaking.

THE CLEAN HOUSE

Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Studio Theater

June 10 – July 8, 2023

by Sarah Ruhl

Directed by Meredith Miranda

From award-winning playwright Sarah Ruhl comes this dramatic comedy infused with laughter and magical realism.  Lane has hired Brazilian housekeeper Matilde to clean her house, but Matilde is more interested in coming up with the perfect joke than in house-cleaning.  As Lane’s clean-freak sister Virginia clandestinely takes over Matilde’s cleaning duties, Lane’s husband reveals that he has found his soulmate in Ana, a cancer patient he has treated. As Lane’s life seems to fall apart, humor, pain, and mortality bring the women together in this whimsical and wildly funny play about class, comedy, and the true nature of love.

DESCRIPTION OF SHOW:

This is JD Theatricals Production produced in Collaboration with the Long Beach Playhouse

This heartfelt musical comedy follows an eclectic group of  “tweens” who compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, they spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Eight spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.
